Students Honored at Rotary Luncheon

Senior, Jordan Delay and eighth grade student, Jarred Tallent were honored at the Forest Grove Rotary Luncheon on December 18th at Pacific University. Kathy Delay was there to watch Jordan receive his award. Mr. and Mrs. Tallent were there to watch Jarred be recognized! These two Gaston students were recognized for outstanding character and leadership within the school. We're proud of you both!


SWEET REVENGE FINALE!

December 18th marked the end of the Sweet Revenge Canned Food Drive at Gaston Junior Senior High School! Ryan Sweet's Junior Career's Project was to conduct a canned food drive to benefit families in the Gaston area. Students brought in 502 cans of food to be donated to the local food bank. When cans were brought in, students put them in staff boxes. Staff agreed to kiss a variety of animals, depending on how many cans were donated on their behalf. The project was a fun way to give back to the community.

Junior Careers Mock Interviews

Juniors were involved with mock interviews last week as part of their Junior Careers course. Students were dressed up and ready for meeting with adults to interview for jobs they are interested in. It was a great exercise, nerves and all!

Fernando Jimenez Wins Second Place at Woods Fair


Mr. Sim's woods student, Fernando Jimenez, entered his table into a woods show at the Expo Center last weekend. He took second place and received the prizes shown on top of the table. Great job Fernando (and Mr. Sims)!

Summer Catino Wins Tech Grant and Implements Chrome Books!


Summer Catino applied for and received a technology grant allowing her to purchase eight new Chrome Books for her classroom. Above, students are working on Kahn Academy, an on-line math program. Students are really enjoying using the new technology!

Teacher Awarded Grant!

Janet Tidwell, our junior/senior high school special education teacher found out today that she was awarded the NWRESD's GAP Foundation Grant of $560.00 for software to help increase reading skills for struggling readers! THANK YOU Mrs. Tidwell for taking the time to apply for this grant and congratulations on your award! Our students will benefit from your diligence and commitment!

FALL SPORTS BANQUET

Tuesday, November 12th, parents of students in high school football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country met to celebrate the completion of each season. The event was held at the Knights of Pythias Hall. We appreciate the generosity of the KOP in allowing us to meet there! Thank you to coaches, parents, and students for a great season! We appreciate your support!

CONFERENCES

Gaston Junior Senior High School will have conferences this Wednesday and Thursday (November 6th-7th). Students will be dismissed at noon on both days. Conferences will take place on Wednesday from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Thursday conferences will take place from 1:00-8:00 p.m. Please feel free to call for an appointment (503-985-7516) or drop by either night. Stop by the office for your child's report card, a cup of coffee, and a cookie! We're looking forward to seeing you and working together to help your child be successful! 

Please note: there will be no school on Friday, November 8th or Monday, November 11th. Have a great Veteran's Day off with your child.

IGNITE Ignites!


Seventh grade students were connected with high school students last week to begin the IGNITE program. Ignite was designed to as a mentoring program for students entering junior high. High school students mentoring seventh grade students with the goal helping students experience success as they transition from grade school to junior high.Ignite will meet once each month!

Hands-On Science Field Trip





Mrs. Kent's science class went to Big Creek Hatchery outside of Astoria on September 23rd. They learned a lot about spawning salmon and collecting data. On the way home, they stopped near Jewel for lunch and spotted lots of wildlife! It was a great day to learn!

Several members of Forest Grove First Ward LDS Church volunteered last Saturday morning at Gaston Junior Senior High School. Showcases were cleaned, closets were cleaned, athletic materials were re-organized, and the school looks even cleaner and brighter than it had. GASTON VOLLEYBALL ON FIRE

Gaston High School Volleyball team beat Neah-Kah-Nie last night in four matches. Scores were: 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, and 25-22. Way to go lady Hounds!

Our junior high volleyball team beat Perrydale last night at home!

THANK YOU for Your Help

Many parents, community members and business entities donate items each year that benefit our kids. We sure appreciate everything everyone does to make our school a great place to be.

Football parents provided a meal for the athletes for last Friday's home game. Thanks for feeding our players. We sure appreciate you!

Nike and OSAA donated three boxes of items for our students, including: shoes, apparel, and bags. We will pick them up this week and have them to use for some of our students. 

Patrick Lynch recently donated approximately $200.00 to our woods program, including: new "Dowel-it-Jig," bags of pre-cut dowels, new "Line-Boring Jig," new "Precise Taper Cutting Jig," new circle saw blade storage and amp, face plates, new Kreg Jig, and other great items for woods!

Gaston Junior Senior High Band Earns Mayor's Award

GJSHS band worked hard during the summer to be able to enter a float and play during the Wapato Showdown Parade. Not only did they have terrific participation and a very cool float, they earned the Mayor's Choice Award for the parade! THANK YOU Mr. Johnson for leading our music students and representing our awesome school so well! Great job, kids!

Remember: school starts on Wednesday, September 4th at 8:15. There will be a First Day of School Assembly at 8:15 in the gym. ALL are welcome to join us.

Wapato Showdown!

The Wapato Showdown Parade is Friday, August 23rd at 6:30 p.m. We hope you'll be on Main Street in Gaston to cheer on Gaston JSHS Band with Mr. Johnson! A steak feed will follow the parade. On Saturday, August 24th, a pancake feed will take place at the fire station and the car show will take place on the ball fields at Brown Park! Hope you can make it. Many of our students are involved in various fund-raisers during the events. Let's support our kids!

Today was Registration Day at GJSHS. We had many parents and students come pick up and work out schedules for school! If you weren't able to come to Registration Day, please try to stop by and see the secretaries before school starts. They are here each day from 8:00-4:00. We're gearing up for a great year at Gaston Junior/Senior High School!
